Other Relationship Information about Mechelle McNair and Steve McNair:

Police spokesman Don Aaron said McNair's wife, Mechelle, is "very distraught" over the death of her husband, Steve.

In June 2009, McNair opened a restaurant near the Tennessee State University campus. It was closed the evening of his death, but had become a small memorial, where flowers, candles and notes had been placed outside the door.

The Titans announced that they will open LP Field, where they play their home games, for a two-day memorial for Steve. He was buried in his hometown, Mount Olive, Mississippi on Saturday, July 10, 2009.

Their son, Tyler, tweeted the following message online during the morning of July 4, 2009, shortly before Steve was murdered: "jus so yall no my dad does not do twitter yet haha"

The relatives and enterprises McNair left behind have struggled to move on without him. His Green Hills mansion was on the market for $3.2 million before he died, but it's no longer listed. His wife, Mechelle, and their two sons, Tyler and Trenton, still live there. His youth foundation's offices are closed, its online events calendar ending with a September 2009 memorial. His restaurant, Gridiron 9 in North Nashville, sits empty.Even his estate remains unsettled. Because McNair left no will, family members must wait until at least September to find out what share of $19 million they're due.

Mechelle McNair is untangling her late husband's estate, settling with creditors and asking for enough to support herself and her children. She'll learn the answer in probate court on Sept. 28, as will the mothers of McNair's two older children in Mississippi, Steven L. McNair Jr., 18, an incoming freshman at Pearl River Community College in Mississippi, and Steven O'Bryan Koran McNair. McNair, who earned more than $80 million in NFL contract money, died without signing a will, leaving behind an estimated $19 million, including properties. He was the third pick of the Houston Oilers in 1995 and signed a seven-year deal, moving to Tennessee with the team in 1997. He would re-sign before playing for the Baltimore Ravens in 2006. He retired after the 2007 season, ending his 13-year NFL career. Since McNair didn't leave a will, his wife withdrew almost $4 million from a trust to pay for federal estate and other taxes, court records show.

In an e-mail to Thompson, McNair explained it would have to be a portrait of Mechelle and their two children and not of his older two because "my wife has some disagreements" with the two boys "who are not by her, so I wouldn't be having them in the painting." The estate tried to fight the claim, but the court gave Thompson $5,000. Also to be decided is who gets McNair Farms Inc. in Mississippi, described as a ranching and farming business, and "The Ranch," a mansion near his boyhood home of Mount Olive in southern Mississippi. McNair and investors hoped for big money from Gridiron 9, a North Nashville restaurant near Tennessee State University that carried his Titans jersey number. It closed shortly after his death, and the "for lease" sign is still hanging a year later, along with pictures of a heroic McNair wearing the jersey and gripping a football.
