She became his teacher again when he was in the sixth grade, and their sexual relationship began during the summer of 1996, when Vili was 13 and she was 34. Her husband became aware of the situation when he read their letters to each other in February of 1997 and revealed it to family members. His cousin then reported the relationship to local child protection services.

On February 26, 1997, Letourneau was arrested for statutory rape, called "child rape" in Washington. Four months later, she gave birth to Fualaau's daughter, Audrey Lokelani.

Mary was released from jail early on (January 1, 1998) for good behavior, on the condition that she not see Fualaau. However, on February 3, 1998, police discovered Letourneau in a car with Fualaau and arrested her for violating the conditions of her suspended sentence.

In March, 1998, prison officials discovered that Letourneau was pregnant with another child by Fualaau. Their second daughter, Alexis Georgia, was born in Tacoma on October 16, 1998. Hours after the birth, Mary Kay Letourneau was returned to prison. In November, 1999, Letourneau was placed in solitary confinement for six months for smuggling letters to Fualaau.

Two days after Mary's release, Fualaau, who was by then 21, applied to the court to lift the no-contact order; the request was granted. Letourneau and Fualaau were married on May 20, 2005 in the Seattle suburb of Woodinville in an elegant and clearly expensive ceremony at the Columbia Winery, covered by the media.

Vili co-authored the book Un seul crime, l'amour with Mary Kay.

Many believe that Mary Kay Letourneau is still victimizing Vili Fualaau. Ken Schram of KOMO TV in Seattle writes, "Not content with erasing Vili's childhood, the ever-twisted Mary Kay is intent on making sure his adult life is ruined forever."

Although "Entertainment Tonight" and "The Insider" had exclusive rights to the wedding, show officials insist they did not pay for the wedding. KING 5 News reported that the couple would earn around $750,000 for their wedding footage.

Letourneau wore a long white wedding gown. Vili Fualaau helped choose the gown. Vili wore a black tuxedo.

Their two daughters were the flower girls. Fualaau's two young nephews were ring bearers. Vili had six groomsmen and Mary Kay had four bridesmaids. Two of Vili's brothers were groomsmen. The bridesmaids where Vili's sister, her oldest daughter Mary Claire was the maid of honor, and two friends. One friend, Kathleen, Mary Kay met while in prison. The wedding was the first time that Vili and Mary Kay's two young daughters had met Mary Claire. Mary Kay and Vili were said to have written their own vows.

Mary will emcee "Hot Teacher Night" and Vili will deejay at the Fuel Sports Eats & Beats bar in Seattle, Washington on Saturday, May 23, 2009.
